This is the first review in a series of articles about GPS tracking software. In this article we focus on TOP-5 platforms for end users.

Our intention was to compare the best independent GPS tracking platforms. The necessary conditions for the software to be included in the list were:

  1. to be compatible with GPS trackers of different manufacturers;
  2. to provide the services in SaaS form.

We examined the 5 most popular independent GPS tracking platforms for end usersand would like to present you the results of our research.

1. Loccate

Better suits companies that need rich business features, but is also convenient for personal use

Business functionalityAdvanced
Price from (monthly)5$/asset

The platform supports a large variety of device models (600+ different models), offers Mobile Apps and provides you with all the essential tools if you opt for a free account moving towards a fully functional GPS tracking platform as you upgrade your tariff plan. Such features as: real-time tracking, notifications, history, geofencing, POI, sensors, 18 months history storing, 10 world maps, advanced map tools, downloadable analytic reports, rich business apps, EcoDriving, driver ID, tachograph, free access to API, data forwarding, third-party apps integrations and some more – are available. There also are such features as automatic device activation and online remote device configuration with user-friendly widgets right from the web interface– no need to send sophisticated M2M configuration messages. The customer support is also of a high level – you can text the support right from the official website (e-mail support and documentation are also available).

This software is ideal for users who don’t want to become GPS experts in order to use the platform – it is really user-friendly and can satisfy the needs of a small company or just a cautious vehicle owner.

Pros:

  • Extremely intuitive and functional User Interface
  • Advanced customer support
  • Rich business functionality
  • Large number of supported device models

Cons:

  • Relatively high price

In short, this software is a good choice if you want to track your family members and pets, optimize your company’s fleet or mobile workers’ workflow and you don’t want to spend time learning to use difficult tools.

2. GPS Trace Orange

Ideal for personal use if you don’t want to spend any money. Not for business.

ModelFree
Max. devices5
Business functionalityNo

A free software from Wialon developers. The advantage of this solution is that it’s absolutely free and supports a large variety (600+ models) of GPS tracking devices which is great if you want to try any new model or just to get familiar with GPS tracking in general and you don’t want to think about additional costs. However, there are certain limitations as to the use of the platform: you can only connect 1 car + 4 personal trackers/smartphones and you’re limited with 20 notifications (only 5 email notifications) and 15 geofences max. The activation and configuration of the devices isn’t automatic, so that can also be a challenge and a time-taking task for the beginners.

The features of the platform are great if you want to track your family members but no business functionality is available and the tech support is only via the forum that has the solution to the most common problems. Also, the history storage period is only 30 days and the design of the User Interface is sometimes a bit confusing if you are a newcomer in GPS tracking. But the solution is free and it requires no installation which is very useful.

Pros:

  • It’s free
  • Large number of device models
  • Good basic functionality

Cons:

  • No business functionality
  • Only 5 trackers max and only 1 vehicle tracker
  • Lack of automatic device activation
  • Short history storage period

In short, this software is great if you’re looking for a free GPS tracking platform to get familiar with the technology or to monitor where your family members are. If you need a platform for any business-related purposes, this is not the best option.

3. GPSWOX

Suits both private users and companies that don’t need sophisticated business features

ModelFreemium
Max. free devices1
Business functionalityMedium
Price from (monthly)€2.99/device

GPSWOX is a platform that offers different solutions for service providers and for personal use. For the sake of this review we focused on the tariffs that are aimed at consumers’ market. You can track 1 device for free with almost no functionality available and progress towards fully functional platform as you grow. The platform provides such features as: real-time tracking, mobile apps, notifications, history and reports, fuel savings, geofences, POI and some more.

Pros:

  • Tech support 24/7
  • Flexible pricing for 1-5-50 devices
  • Good basic functionality and some business-oriented features

Cons:

  • Restricted access to API (you have to upgrade to white label solution for it)
  • Relatively small number of supported devices in comparison with Loccate and GPS Trace (400+ device models, according to company’s website)

In short, GPSWOX is a viable option to consider if you want to track your family members and pets or if you have a small company that doesn’t need sophisticated business applications.

4. GPS-server.net

Affordable solution for end-customers and companies that don’t need high functionality

ModelPaid
Business functionalityMedium
Price from (monthly)€0,7/device

This platform also suits end users and businesses. For the sake of this article we analyzed the Personal account option. It gives you a 14-days free trial, mobile apps, some of the business features and the billing model is a bit different – the platform will charge you yearly, not monthly (we showed the monthly price in the table above to put things in perspective). Some features available with this solution: real-time tracking, history, events, reports, sensors, object control, geofences, routes, POIs and more.

Pros:

  • Competitive price
  • Easy to use
  • Semi-automatic device activation

Cons:

  • No possibility to track any number of devices for free
  • Lack of profound business functionality
  • Relatively small number of supported devices in comparison with Loccate and GPS Trace (400+ device models, according to company’s website)

In short, it is a GPS tracking software that will suit you if you need to track family members or pets. If you don’t need a sophisticated business features and the budget is already tight – it is also a viable option to consider to optimize your mobile workers workflow or your fleet.

5. GpsGate

Suits companies that need rich functionality and experienced users

ModelPaid
Business functionalityAdvanced
Price from (monthly)$9,95/device

GpsGate offers two different consumer-oriented solutions: you can choose between SaaS and On-Premise options (in this case you can download it right from the website). We examined the SaaS option and we have found such features as: real-time tracking, notifications, history, geofencing, POI, sensors, advanced map tools, downloadable analytic reports, business apps, EcoDriving, driving fatigue alert, driver ID, data forwarding, access to API, some interesting business functionality and 500+ device models supported.

Pros:

  • Rich business functionality
  • Useful educational videos
  • Various options of deployment for end-users with different bonuses (free trial vs 5 devices for free)

Cons:

  • Relatively high price
  • Lack of automatic device activation and graphic interface for remote device management
  • Complicated User Interface

In short, this software is a good choice if you want to track your family members and pets as well as if you need to optimize your company’s fleet or mobile workers’ workflow and you don’t mind spending time learning how to operate the platform.
